High-quality food whilst saving the planet

We grow nutritious and delicious food in the places it’s eaten, and in this changing world add value to the sustainability of city centres

City Farmstead vertical farming

Our specialism at City Farmstead is Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA), an exact and automated approach to indoor growing based on the latest AgriTech methods, referred to simply as Vertical Farming. A Vertical Farm is a closed system housed within a superstructure or building. It has fully controlled lighting, heating, ventilation, irrigation, and airflow. Farming in this way presents the opportunity to home-grow seasonal produce all year round while sustainably reducing the carbon footprint of food production – we believe this is the future of farming.

City Farmstead can help shape this agricultural future through pioneering urbanised Vertical Farming, growing fresh produce from city-centre locations across the UK. Our vision is to lead innovation in controlled environment food production, establishing an integrated network of ecologically aware, carbon-neutral, high-yield, profitable Vertical Farms across metropolitan areas. In addition, we want to repurpose retail shops into urban farms, adding value to the appeal and sustainability of town centres over the long term. We are a leading-edge company driven by the importance of innovation and collaboration, aspiring to build and operate these ‘Farms of the Future’, growing food sustainability and efficiency. We bring together academics, innovators, and entrepreneurs to overcome industry challenges, drive research, and promote workable solutions for market adoption. As a result, we can optimise crop growth beyond just producing biomass of acceptable quality by increasing quality crop productivity in volume to feed future generations.

Through pragmatic thinking we have devised a profitable model to stand on its own without subsidy, and, to achieve this, we’ve taken the decision not to wholesale. Instead, we will retail all the food we grow from our Farm Shop Café as packaged fruit in punnets and as main ingredients to high-value café shop menu dishes or deli consumer items to take away. Under this model, we can retain maximum profit from the sale of produce and have a commercially viable farm.

The Princes Quay Shopping Centre in the great City of Hull is positioned to establish our landmark and flagship Vertical Farm, research centre and base headquarters.

SUSTAINABILITY

Being carbon neutral sits at the core of our values. We want all our Smart-Farms to be carbon negative and plan to reach a series of milestones on the route to negative carbon farming.

Global agriculture accounts for 70% of freshwater consumption. By adopting alternative irrigation technologies such as hydroponics and aeroponics, we offer sustainable soilless solutions for reduced water consumption in the growing process, and our systems use 60-70% less water than traditional outdoor agriculture.

CAFÉ

Our Future Venture

Smart-Farms have an adjoining café area at the frontage, showcasing a range of our produce on the menu while selling it at retail prices. In addition, a prominent partition wall made from glass creates a cool customer viewing gallery from the seating area, akin to a visitors experience.

We want the café to be diverse, inclusive, accessible, welcoming, with affordable prices and a service team made up of local people. In addition, we are committed to supporting locally sourced produce and producers. So, in addition to our hydroponically grown fruit, salad and vegetables, we will stock locally sourced artisan foods from fresh pastries to cheese and crackers.

ABOUT

Our Values

We value quality Vertical Farming, ensuring it’s undertaken with extreme care, captivating innovations in science and technology to grow exceptionally tasting food without compromising quality, ethics or environmental impact. We have started on a pursuit to grow delightfully tasting fruits in better, more sustainable ways with transparent end-to-end administration of the supply chain so that we can add value for our customers and shoppers. We intend to grow our fruits to precisely the right size and shape, harvest them with love and care, and pack almost immediately at the farm, so there’s no journey to a packhouse or chlorine washing. Our food can be natural, fresh, and ready to eat, placing ethics, sustainability, and taste first. Our founders are committed to a more sustainable food chain. We pledge to decouple food production from environmental harm along our supply chain, creating better quality jobs and making healthy and delicious food affordable and accessible.
